چکیده

The composite structure of the S2 layer in the wood cell wall is defined by the angle of the cellulose microfibrils and concentration of polymers and this structure impacts strength and stiffness. The objective of this study was to use near infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to determine the effect of lignin and cellulose associated wavelengths, microfibril angle, density, and radial position within the tree on strength and stiffness. The aromatic portion of lignin provided a good predictive role on strength and stiffness at high microfibril angles. However, in mature wood where microfibril angle and lignin content was low, cellulose associated wavelengths became increasingly important. The increased importance of the aromatic portion of lignin (1665 nm) on the strength as microfibril angle increased was attributable to the plastic deformation of lignin that occurred beyond the yield point. Finally, a fourfold increase in stiffness was observed when the microfibril angle dropped from 40 to 5 . 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Variation of cellulose microfibril angles in softwoods and hardwoods-a possible strategy of mechanical optimization.

Position-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering was used to investigate the nanostructure of the wood cell wall in two softwood species (Norwegian spruce and Scots pine) and two hardwood species (pedunculate oak and copper beech). The tilt angle of the cellulose fibrils in the wood cell wall versus the longitudinal cell axis (microfibril angle) was systematically studied over a wide range of ann...

Variation of microfibril angle of Pinus... VARIATION OF MICROFIBRIL ANGLE OF Pinus radiata D. Don IN RELATION TO TREE SPACING IN CHILEAN PLANTATIONS1

Four stands of 28-year-old radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) grown in the eighth region (Biobio) of Chile were sampled to determine the effect of tree spacing on the microfibril angle. The samples were taken at two different stem levels of the tree, 2.5 m and 7.5 m, with increment strip taken in the Nothern direction. The four experimental stands were characterized by the following spacing 2x...

The path back: oaks (Quercus spp.) facilitate longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) seedling establishment in xeric sites

Understanding plant–plant facilitation is critical for predicting how plant community function will respond to changing disturbance and climate. In longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystems of the southeastern United States, understanding processes that affect pine reproduction is imperative for conservation efforts that aim to maintain ecosystem resilience across its wide geographic ran...

Wood properties in a long-lived conifer reveal strong climate signals where ring-width series do not.

Although tree-ring-width chronologies have been widely used for temperature reconstructions, there are many sites around the world at which there is little evidence of a clear climate signal in the ring-width chronologies. This is the case with the long-lived conifer Huon pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii (Hook. F.) Quinn), endemic to Tasmania, Australia, when the species grows at low elevation. I...

The Determination of Cellulose Spiral Angle by Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering from Structurally Characterized Acacia mangium Cell Wall

The spiral angle of the elementary cellulose fibril in the wood cell wall, often called microfibril angle, (MFA). Microfibril angle in hardwood is one of the key determinants of solid timber performance due to its strong influence on the stiffness, strength, shrinkage, swelling, thermal-dynamics mechanical properties and dimensional stability of wood. Variation of MFA (degree) in the S2 layer o...
